Green is Our Favorite Color: Embracing Environmental Sustainability

December 10, 2024

We might be known for our love of blue — after all, our hardware is called the BlueBox. But don’t let that fool you; when it comes to sustainability, green is our favorite color.

Encouraging an Environmentally Conscious Workplace

Sustainability starts with the mindset of our employees at TASKING Labs in Slovenia. We actively encourage an environmentally conscious mentality throughout our organization.

Many employees choose to bike to work, reducing carbon emissions and promoting a healthier lifestyle. We’ve made company bikes available for short trips to nearby restaurants during lunch breaks to support this eco-friendly commute we’ve made company bikes available for short trips to nearby restaurants during lunch breaks.

Additionally, we’ve embraced the use of reusable plastic boxes for cafeteria meals, significantly cutting down on waste from takeout packaging.

iC7 BlueBox Hardware Packaging: Design Meets Environmental Responsibility

One of the standout examples of our commitment to the environment is the packaging for our iC7 BlueBox Hardware Debuggers. From the moment you open the box, it’s clear that every detail has been carefully planned with sustainability in mind.

The packaging is made from nature-safe cardboard with minimal printing and color use, which not only reduces waste but also highlights our commitment to eco-friendly practices.

See below how the iC7 BlueBox Hardware Debugger is packed.

We’ve eliminated plastic from our packaging, opting instead for paper bags or small paper boxes to house ribbon cables, grounding wires, and other components. Even the organization inside the box reflects our focus on sustainability; each item has its place, ensuring that everything remains secure without the need for additional protective materials.

Printing User Manuals: Less Paper, More Sustainability

In line with our eco-conscious mindset, we strive to reduce the amount of printed material we produce, particularly hardware user manuals. We limit printing to the essentials, such as safety regulations and necessary compliance information. By printing as few manuals as possible, and using minimal color for clarity where required, we significantly cut down on paper and ink usage without compromising the quality or usability of our products. This small change helps us reduce our environmental impact while ensuring customers still have access to the information they need.

Sustainable In-house Production Practices

We’ve adopted several sustainable production practices that reflect our commitment to green manufacturing. For example, we don’t outsource our manufacturing to countries with exploitative labor practices or poor environmental records. By keeping our production in-house and locally, we maintain control over our processes and ensure that our products are made ethically and sustainably.

We also make it a priority to support the longevity of our products. We stock parts for nearly all of our older products and offer servicing for discontinued items to keep them in use as long as possible. This not only reduces electronic waste but also offers our customers reliable, long-term solutions.

In line with this philosophy, we repurpose older devices whenever possible. A great example is how we convert iC3000 housings into power supplies. This approach not only reduces waste but also gives new life to components that might otherwise be discarded.

Whenever we can, we opt to buy used PCs, further reducing our environmental footprint. This practice aligns with our broader goal of minimizing resource consumption while still delivering cutting-edge technology.

3D Printing for a Greener Tomorrow

In our production process at TASKING Labs in Slovenia, innovation meets sustainability through the use of 3D printing.

We design and 3D print custom equipment for drilling, placing labels on hardware, and easing soldering and assembly processes.

We also 3D print special housings for our emulation adapter parts—sensitive components that require careful handling.

This DIY approach not only speeds up production but also reduces the environmental impact by minimizing the need for external suppliers and unnecessary shipping. By producing these housings in-house, we ensure precision while also reducing waste and transportation emissions.

A Commitment to Compliance and Sustainability

Our dedication to sustainability is also reflected in our compliance with industry standards. We adhere strictly to RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) regulations in our production processes, ensuring that our products are free from harmful substances.

This commitment to environmental safety extends to our choice to eliminate CDs and USB sticks from our product distribution, offering downloads instead. This not only reduces plastic waste but also optimizes the delivery process for our customers.
