Pioneering Safety-Critical Software: DENSO’s Journey with the LDRA tool suite

How DENSO improves software quality while preparing for future safety standards.

What is it about

DENSO at a Glance

DENSO Corporation is a leading global supplier of advanced automotive technologies, systems, and components for major automakers worldwide. Operating in 32 countries and regions with more than 112,000 associates, DENSO combines hardware and software expertise to deliver high-quality, dependable solutions for the automotive market. The company’s Electronic Systems Business Group focuses on developing engine ECUs and integrated circuits for automotive control systems, promoting synergies between hardware and software development.

Balancing Performance, Safety, and Compliance

For DENSO, software quality and dependability in the field are essential. At the same time, optimizing code size and ensuring real-time performance on resource-limited target hardware were critical project requirements. These needs are further amplified in AUTOSAR environments, where the demands on software platforms are rigorous. With the automotive industry moving toward safety integrity standards similar to those in aerospace, DENSO faced the challenge of leading innovation while meeting increasingly complex compliance expectations.

A Unified Approach to Software Analysis

DENSO adopted the LDRA tool suite to apply uniform analysis techniques and enforce consistent standards across its software platforms. Leveraging LDRA’s proven software analysis methods, DENSO was able to benchmark third-party and internal platforms, improving overall code quality, dependability, and compliance. The tool suite’s integration into development processes also enabled the team to balance quality and efficiency while addressing the demands of next-generation automotive systems.

Stronger Software Quality and Compliance

By deploying the LDRA tool suite, DENSO significantly improved software quality, introduced a consistent approach to standards compliance, and achieved substantial cost and time savings for both current and future projects. The uniform platform of analysis not only enhanced dependability but also supported the company’s broader R&D efforts to prepare for evolving safety standards.

“We have taken advantage of LDRA’s software analysis techniques to improve the quality of our software platform. The LDRA tool suite is used as a benchmark for other third-party and similar software platform products.”

— Mr. Akihito Iwai, Project Manager, DENSO Japan

Looking Ahead

DENSO plans to expand its use of LDRA’s testing and analysis techniques to further strengthen software validation in automotive systems. Building on methodologies long proven in aerospace, DENSO aims to pioneer their application in the automotive industry, supporting the development of safer, more reliable vehicles and preparing for the widespread adoption of safety integrity standards.
